Here at Rockaway, community is ingrained in our culture.
We invite you to be part of it.
In 1906, Rockaway Beach started to become a haven for families, aristocrats and bold business people escaping the big city. The community of Rockaway was established as a seaside resort in 1909 by the Rockaway Beach Company. It was named after Rockaway Beach on Long Island in New York, and its post office was established in 1911. The seaside resort was connected by train to Portland in 1912.
Rockaway Beach became known as a city of hard-working entrepreneurs in the fishing and transportation industries. It also was home to artists and writers.
Since its early days, Rockaway Beach has specialized in hospitality, offering its visitors and residents a unique place to work and play with seven miles of beach on the ocean’s edge. Join our close-knit coastal community and enjoy the relaxed pace and sense of permanent vacation found here.
